How To Reach Sikkim By Air

The only airport in Sikkim is Palyoung Airport, 31 km (19 mi) south of Gangtok. It has been opened on September 24, 2018, and on October 4, 2018, the first commercial flights took off. It is spread over 201 acres. It lies at an elevation of 4590 ft and is one of the five highest airports in India. There are daily flights available from Delhi, Kolkata, and Guwahati, but at present, no international flights are available in Pakyoung airport.

If you’re coming to Sikkim from abroad, you’ll have to take a flight to one of the big cities. Other than Pakyoung, Bagdogra is the closest airstrip for Gangtok. Bagdogra is 126 km away from Gangtok and this is the most convenient way to reach Sikkim. There is also a helicopter service that takes 35 minutes between Bagdogra and Gangtok.

How To Reach Sikkim By Road

The Sikkim government runs the Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT) at fixed rates between Siliguri and Gangtok from its bus terminal in Siliguri. Gangtok is 124 kms and can be connected by rail from where majority of the tourist gets off at New Jalpaiguri. Sevoke Road links Bagdogra, New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri and NH 10.

A few other vehicles namely, Tata Sumo, Mahindra Bolero and Toyota Innova are also available. There are not too many reliable and comfortable taxi service providers in Sikkim. Prepaid taxi counters are available at Bagdogra airport (outside the arrival hall exit) and New Jalpaiguri station (across the station entrance). These taxis run on the fixed rate system.

As of 2017 Sikkim registered taxi could be availed at either point, since the ones with West Bengal number will bring you up to Deorali Taxi stand (2km downhill of the town center at Gangtok).
