Alleppey Hotels and Resorts to stay

History of Alleppey

In the early days of Alleppey, the region was known as Kerala. The name Alleppey is derived from the two Sanskrit words “allay” and “puram”, which means “the land between the sea and the river”. Legend has it that Parasurama, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, created Kerala by throwing his axe across the waters of the Arabian Sea. The place where the axe landed came to be known as Alleppey.

Alleppey has a long and rich history. It was once a part of the Travancore kingdom, which was ruled by the famous queen Lakshmi Bai. The queen was very fond of elephants and used to keep a large number of them in her palace. Later, when she died, her elephants were brought to Alleppey and were given to temples and other religious institutions.

During the British rule, Alleppey was a major centre for trade and commerce. The British built a large number of warehouses and godowns in Alleppey to store their goods. The town was also an important centre for coir production. Coir is a fibre obtained from coconut husks and is used in making ropes, mats, etc.

After Independence, Alleppey became a part of Kerala state. In 1956, it was merged with Travancore-Cochin state and became one of its 14 districts. In 1969, Kuttan ad, a part of Alleppey district, was declared as the first irrigation zone in India and since then it has been a major hub for agriculture.

Alleppey is now one of the most well-known tourist destinations in Kerala. The town is renowned for its houseboat cruises on the backwaters, lush green paddy fields, peaceful beaches and ancient temples.
